Johnians mourn board of governors chairman,  Awowole

Old students of St John’s Grammar School, Ile-Ife are mourning the death on April 1, this year of the chairman of the school’s  board of governors, Mr.Segun Awowole. In a message of condolence to the family by the president of St John’s Old Boys Association, SJOBA, Dr. Festus Oshoba, the association described him as an exemplary leader and committed educationist who contributed immensely to the development of his community. He said the association will miss his wise counsel and active intervention and support towards re-positioning the school as the foremost Christian institution committed to raising morally upright and brilliant students. Johnian Segun Awowole, popularly called DeGuv, belonged to the 1975 set and was a former Principal of St John’s Grammar School. He played significant roles as a member of the association’s  Perimeter Fence Technical and Implementation Committee by attracting funds  and supervising the landmark project. Burial plans announced by the family disclosed that his remains will be buried on Wednesday April 7, this year following funeral mass at the St John’s the Evangelist Catholic Church, Oke-Atan, Ile-Ife. Johnians inaugurate N50million old school projects on Saturday

Old students of St John’s Grammar School, Ile-Ife, Osun State will, on Saturday, inaugurate projects worth N50million naira and formally hand them over to the school’s management. The projects include gated fence worth N18million; a full size bronze statue of the founder, Rev. Father Fabian Cloutier, N5.1 million; modern toilets, N12.5million; library renovation, N5million and renovation of two blocks of classrooms at N15million. Osun State Governor Isiaka Oyetola and His Imperial Majesty, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife are expected at the event. While the gated fence was funded from the purse of the association, individual sets and philantropic old students facilitated the renovation of facilities. Among the old students who sponsored projects is Engr. Ayodele Alabi whose bronze statue of the founder welcomes visitors to the main grounds of the school. The statue, atop a marble structure, is 4.3m (13ft) in height. Besides, Ayodele also renovated a wing of a block of classrooms. Another old student, Senator Iyiola Omisore donated a computer class and generator while Senator Babajide Omoworare renovated the administrative block. The 1973/77 and 1976/81 sets renovated blocks of classrooms while the 1979/84 set renovated the library. Publicity secretary and former Lagos State Commissioner for Information & Strategy, Kehinde Bamigbetan said the association will also confer on the governor and the monarch the Grand Patron awards of the association to appreciate their contributions to educational development of the state. Established in 1962 by Reverend Father Cloutier, a Canadian Catholic missionary, the school has graduated no fewer than 9.112 students.

Emulate Virtues of ComPol Awotinde, Johnians urge police officers

The St John’s Old Boys Association, SJOBA has called on serving police officers to emulate the virtues of honesty and diligence of outgoing Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Awosola Awotinde. Congratulating the Commissioner of Police on his retirement which fell on his birthday, the SJOBA praised Awotinde for living by the principles imparted to students of the school in the course of his career. Publicity secretary Kehinde Bamigbetan in a statement said Awotinde graduated from the school in 1975 after undergoing the most rigorous and all-round secondary education that missionary curriculum could give. He said, St John’s Grammar School, established by Canadian Catholic Reverend Father, Fabian Cloutier, combined spiritual and academic training to produce leaders for the African continent. ” On behalf of the newly-elected president, Dr. Festus Osoba, we hereby congratulate Johnian Awosola Awotinde for enabling the moral virtues of our school to shine brightly in him through a distinguished career in the Nigeria Police. We encourage serving police officers to emulate these virtues so that Nigeria’s dream of an efficient, incorruptible and people-oriented police can be achieved, ” he said. The outgoing Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police was born at Orunto Jaojo Compound of Iremo Quarters in Ile- Ife and attended St John’s Anglican Primary School Ilare Ile – Ife and St John’s Grammar School Ilode, Ile – Ife,where he completed his West African School Certificate. Graduating from the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University in 1984 with Bachelor’s in English, he served in the National Youth Service Corps in the old Imo State. Awotinde was engaged by the Nigeria Police as Cadet Assistant Superintendent Of Police in February, 1986 and rose through the ranks to become a Commissioner of Police. He was, at various times, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oyo State; Instructor, Police College Enugu; Police Pay Master and Staff Officer in the office of the Force Secretary at the Headquarters. JOHNIANS CELEBRATE DELE MOMODU AT 60

The St John’s Old Boys Association, SJOBA has joined wellwishers all over the world to celebrate Bashorun Dele Momodu, the accomplished writer, media entrepreneur, prodigious author and famous socialite as he turns 60 today. Bashorun Dele Momodu attended the prestigious St John’s Grammar School, Ile-Ife and graduated in 1976. According to a press statement by Kehinde Bamigbetan, the publicity secretary of the association, Momodu cut his literary teeth and nurtured his talents and craft as a future writer in the conducive intellectual environment of the school. “Bashorun Momodu has demonstrated the virtues and values of missionary education that combines spiritual and academic enlightenment. We are indeed proud that a product of our institution has shown the world of media the quality of our nurture.” Recalling that Momodu showed signs of a flourishing career in the media at school, the co-ordinator of the 1972-1976 set, Professor Wale Oladipo, who was once the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party,said Momodu was very sociable and cosmopolitan as a student. ” He was the one who told us when a new musical record of any famous band has been recorded. Alumni get new exco

RESTRICTED by the government regulations on COVID-19, the old boys association of St. John’s Grammar School, Ile-Ife, has devised an electronic poll system to elect its new executives. The device also enabled members of the association in over 20 locations in four continents to fill their ballots and vote. Members voted from Nigeria, Canada, United Kingdom, United States, Denmark, Australia, South Africa, among other countries, last Saturday. Mr. Lanke Bakare, who handled the technical details, said: “We used Google Forms. Google Forms are used to create online surveys and quizzes. These are sent to other people for completion and received back for analysis. It allows you to design the format you want your survey to take and the type of response you want. Responses are automatically collated and easily copied to windows for further analysis.” According to the Secretary of the Electoral Committee, Mr. Yomi Layinka, 218 members participated in the election of the 11-member executive of the association. Layinka, who was the Special Adviser to former Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, said the committee also held series of interactions with the candidates on the association’s Telegram platform fielding questions from all over the world. The new executive council comprises Dr. Festus Osoba (President), Olajide Makinde (First Vice-President), Jibola Awoseyi (Second Vice-President) and Ike Diaku (Third Vice-President) Others are: Prince Debo Adefisan (General Secretary), Obafemi Obadare (Assistant General Secretary), Kehinde Bamigbetan (Publicity Secretary) and Barrister Temitope Elusogbon (Social Secretary). The team also includes Taiwo Adedire (Financial Secretary), Olaolu Omifare (Treasurer) and Adedapo Adeyeba (Auditor). Accepting the mandate on behalf of the new executive, Dr. Osoba hailed the electoral committee for its ingenuity and thanked all members for participating in the digital election. He said: “We promise responsible leadership that benefits the membership. We promise to communicate and give direction; empower others and leave a good and befitting legacy.
